Pet portraits — what I love doing most

Since I was a child, drawing and painting animals has always been my greatest passion. There’s something deeply satisfying about capturing the soul of a creature on canvas. I love how the texture of linen adds unique depth and ‘dogginess’ to a portrait, enhancing a sitter’s character in a way no photo ever could. While a camera can freeze a moment forever in time, a loving brush is able to reveal every subtle trait of personality and spirit. Painting is an indescribable joy. For me, nothing compares to the connection and vitality that traditional canvas brings to each piece.

Fortunately, good quality photos, along with some background details, can provide me enough insight to bring a beloved pet to life on canvas.

Choosing the Perfect Photo of Your Pet

Let’s bring your pet to life on canvas, just as you see them—whether chasing a ball, lounging around, or curled up by the fireplace. First I’ll need a photo that perfectly reflects their personality. Maybe you already have the perfect shot? If not, consider hiring a professional to get the ideal image.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Clear as a bell: the photo should be super sharp and focused.
  • Centre stage: your pet should be front and centre, taking up most of the frame.
  • No cuts: for close-ups, let’s see their whole head and shoulders. For action shots, make sure we can see their entire body, including their ears, paws, and tail.
  • Close-up or full-body: choose the shot that best captures character and personality.

A range of photos is best. This helps me get to know your pet. Use natural light, and outdoors is better than inside. Take a step closer rather than zoom. Email me your photos at full resolution, actual size.

When you’re ready to get in touch, please head to the Commissions page, where you’ll find all the details on how to submit your photos and information. I love dogs, of course! Who doesn’t? But cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, parrots, fish, horses and cows are equally close to my heart. I’m excited to paint the friend closest to yours. Maybe that person is a monkey or a tiger!
